MACEDON. Akanthos. Circa 480-470 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 29 mm, 17.41 g). Lion to right, attacking a bull collapsing to left with head raised; above, pellet-in-annulet; in exergue, stylized akanthos flower. Rev. Quadripartite incuse square with granulated recesses. AMNG III, 2, -. Boston MFA 519. Desneux -, cf. 62-64 (unlisted dies). HGC 3.1, 383. Sharply struck and very attractive, a wonderful and lightly toned example of beautiful late archaic style. Very light doubling on the obverse and small deposits on the reverse, otherwise, extremely fine.
